Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Wvuafm tuscaloosa.
[00:00:09] Speaker B: Happy Sunday, y'.
[00:00:10] Speaker C: All.
[00:00:10] Speaker B: You are listening to Fit to Be Tied with Sheena and Nika on 90.7 the capstone. And girl, it is still hot outside.
[00:00:16] Speaker D: It is September and it is still hot.
[00:00:18] Speaker B: It really is. I just, I don't know.
[00:00:20] Speaker D: I.
[00:00:21] Speaker B: It's hot. But we're in the fall now, so then I feel like fashion wise, you see people that are transitioning into more of those fall. Fall colors, all of those things.
But I, I am curious. How's your semester going, my friend?
[00:00:34] Speaker D: It's going well. It's just hot.
Speaking of transitioning into our fall clothing, I'm still wearing my summer dresses because it's too hot to wear anything other than like light linen fabrics. And so I know I'm creating a ton of fashion like boo boos, but I, I'm, I'm sweating.
[00:00:56] Speaker B: No, I get it. Hey, I'm in hot pink today and we're in September. You know, you actually, what you're wearing right now is a very nice like fall color. So for our listeners who are like, man, you guys are not on video. We can only hear you and you're thinking, what is she wearing? Really cute linen dress.
[00:01:12] Speaker D: Thanks. But it's linen, you know, and Labor Day already happened and so it's like a shame, shame. But I just. The people that, you know, edit Vogue, do they have they ever experienced Alabama Heat November?
[00:01:25] Speaker B: No. Their offices are in New York. They don't, they don't, they don't get it.
[00:01:28] Speaker D: They don't get it. They need to come take a field trip. And then I think they may relax the rules a little bit.
[00:01:32] Speaker B: Yes, they really do.
[00:01:34] Speaker D: How's your, how's your semester going so far?
[00:01:36] Speaker B: It is going good. You know, I think we talked about this before. I feel like there was that hard launch into August. So, you know, first you start off with your own kids going back to school. You know, we both have some, some youngins. And then, and then it's that transition back campus. And so it's this crazy busy season. But then I feel like time goes by really fast. Well, some days. But for our listeners that are not aware of the fact that we do pre record this show, we are recording this the day after Labor Day. And I feel like my brain is just actively thinking about that the whole time. And I was telling my staff earlier today that I have a love hate relationship with three day weekends, especially where you've taken the Monday off. Because I feel like every other day that week is trying to Be its own kind of Monday.
[00:02:26] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:02:27] Speaker B: To make up for the fact that you didn't actually have.
[00:02:29] Speaker D: This is Monday, junior. Yes. Yes. My daughter got up today and she's on the volleyball team. She's like, we wear red today. And I'm like, yeah. And then I thought about it and I thought, no, that's Monday. Today's Tuesday.
No blue. And she's like, what's Monday? I said, in your mind it's Monday. But yeah, the coach will say that it's Tuesday.
[00:02:46] Speaker B: Yeah. So it's just, it's very confusing overall, you know, thankfully, that is not going to be the topic of what we talk about today, but we have to acknowledge that, I will say you might think that this is interesting, Nika, especially if you've seen these movies. So over the long weekend Friday, we typically have, like, a little family movie night. My husband and I with our two little kids, and then we ended up having another family movie night on Saturday.
So the first night, I exposed both of my boys and my husband to the Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan.
[00:03:20] Speaker C: Oh.
[00:03:21] Speaker D: Oh, we watch that all the time.
[00:03:23] Speaker B: I know they all thought it was precious. I was, I was really especially happy that my husband Terry really liked it, so I was glad about that. And then the next day, we watched Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan again, and they thought that was really cute too. So I just, you know, you gotta, you gotta bring them back to the classics.
[00:03:41] Speaker D: You know, I grew up watching the actual original originals.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: Yes. With Haley Mills, and then it was it Jody Foster.
[00:03:48] Speaker D: But I love the remakes. I think they did so, so great on those. But, yeah, the Parent Trap with Lindsay is a staple and has been in our house because I have two girls.
[00:03:56] Speaker B: It was perfect. And they really liked the camp scenes. And so it was just, it was a good old time. But I felt like I needed to share that with you because I know you would have been a lover of those movies as well.
[00:04:07] Speaker D: I, I. The only thing I don't like about the new one is that they didn't do that. Let's get together, yeah, yeah, yeah. Song and dance. And Haley Mills did.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: I loved that.
[00:04:16] Speaker B: And so for our listeners who are thinking, like, what are you talking about? Were there actual versions of these MO movies before Lindsay Lohan? Yes, there were. So you've got to go back. You know, my might be a little bit of a different pace than what you're used to, but it's an original Disney classic. Yeah. So with that said, y', all, I guess it's time we Take a break so that we can grow.
[00:04:38] Speaker D: We'll quit going rogue and get, you know, focused.
[00:04:41] Speaker B: Yes, we'll get focused. We'll bring our guests. You know, as always, we like to have our wonderful guests with us. And we're just, we're going to continue to tease what our topic is today. So you're gonna have to keep listening. But you guys, we're going to take a quick.
You are listening to fit to be tied with Sheena and Nneka on 90.7 the capstone.
[00:05:04] Speaker A: Wvuafm tuscaloosa.
[00:05:13] Speaker D: Welcome back, listeners. You are listening to fit to be tied with Sheena and Nika on 90.7 the Capstone.
[00:05:18] Speaker B: That's right. And if you are just now joining us, and as always, that was probably a good thing because we, we tend to go a little crazy in our. In our intro segment. But now it's when we dial in and we really talk about the focus of our show for the day. For the day. And so today we are going to be talking about the capstone wellness Explorer program.
And I don't know anybody better to do that than those that run the whole shindig, which includes Mary Kate Foster, sga, vice president for belonging and wellness, as well as Brooklyn Hadley, Capstone, wellness Explorer director, outreach. Ladies, thank you for being on the show today.
[00:05:56] Speaker C: Thank you so much for having us. We're so excited.
[00:05:58] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:05:59] Speaker D: Yes.
[00:05:59] Speaker B: And so for our listeners, you know that typically in this segment, we really like to focus on getting to know our guests. And so, ladies, I'm going to have you guys take turns with these questions. But first off, we need the details on y' all hometown academic program and why did you come to the Capstone?
[00:06:19] Speaker C: Yeah, well, my name's Mary Kate Foster. I'm from Fairhope, Alabama, and I am in the college of arts and sciences. I'm a psychology major with a minor in human resources management.
I absolutely love it. It's so fun and so cool to learn about all that fun stuff. But honestly, I think the reason that I chose to come to UA was just because I had kind of been going to UA all the football games growing up.
So it was definitely kind of ingrained into my, into my brain from the start and I loved it.
I never had a dull moment when I came and I'm so glad I chose it. It's been so fabulous.
[00:07:02] Speaker A: Hey.
[00:07:03] Speaker D: Hi.
[00:07:03] Speaker A: My name is Brooklyn Hadley. I'm also a psychology major, but I have a microbiome minor and I am pre med.
I'm from Mobile, so not far from Mary Kate. At all.
And honestly, I never. Coming from Mobile, I never thought I wanted to go to ua. I was always like, oh, I have to be different. I have to go somewhere else, whatever.
But obviously, I've always been a huge Alabama fan, like, growing up. And I came for a tour, and I was just like, I don't want to go here.
[00:07:32] Speaker D: Blah, blah, blah, blah.
[00:07:33] Speaker A: And then I went on the tour, and I was like, wait, yes, I do. I'm just kidding. I was like, I'm just kidding. Yes, I actually do really want to go here. And honestly, that's just kind of how it came to fruition. I was like, well, I guess, you know, it's, like, so big. You know, I have my hometown friends that still go here that I still see all the time. But, you know, I've branched out so much and met so many awesome people, and, you know, I've never regretted it a single day.
[00:07:56] Speaker D: That's awesome. Well, I'm so glad that y' all are here. What year are you in college, Mary Kate?
[00:08:02] Speaker C: I'm a junior.
[00:08:03] Speaker D: Junior. Okay. What about you, Brooklyn?
[00:08:04] Speaker A: I'm a senior.
[00:08:04] Speaker B: All right, Well, I. You know, I'm always a big fan of people who have been Alabama fans since they popped out of the womb. You know, when that's ingrained in you and you're going to those football games. So obviously a natural choice to come to the capstone. And we know that you are both involved with the Student Government association in your roles, but tell us about the other areas of involvement that you guys have on campus.
[00:08:28] Speaker C: Yeah, well, I am in the Kappa Delta sorority here at ua. I love it so much. I've found my people, found my spot. And it has been such a. It's such. Been such a great sisterhood for.
For me, and I absolutely love it. I also am in the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. That has been a really cool experience. And now I serve as the vice president for Belonging and Wellness and sga. So it has been so amazing. I've met so many amazing people throughout all of the organizations I've been involved in, and it's been such a blessing.
[00:09:03] Speaker A: So I am a Chi Omega here at Alabama.
I am currently the head research assistant for Dr. Salakin's transcranial direct current simulation lab in the psychology department.
I am director of internal expansions for UA MedLife, which is a new club on campus, and it's really awesome.
And then I am also director of finance and fundraising for UA Miracle.
[00:09:28] Speaker B: We have, like, such smart guests on all the time, like, between the two of you, it's like you're so involved, and you're just so smart, right?
[00:09:38] Speaker D: And. And driven.
I love it. So y' all are neighbors on sorority row? Yes, we are. Yeah.
So tell me about what you love most. So you've made all these connections, you've met all these people, you have a great major, but if you had to pick one thing, what would you say you love the most about ua?
[00:10:03] Speaker C: I think, honestly, coming to such a big university, I was so nervous about whether I'd find my place and find my people and knowing all of the small little groups and clubs and organizations around campus where you're able to get involved and you're able to meet people who think like you and, you know, just want to be friends. It's so awesome. I feel like that's one of. One of the things that I cherish about UA is that no matter where you are, who you are, you will always find your place and where you're going to find your people.
[00:10:36] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I definitely agree with that. I think what I love most about UA is how, like, truly connected you can become by going to this university. I mean, we have over 600 clubs and organizations on campus, and there is truly a spot for everyone here. And, you know, I remember, like, going to get on board day my freshman year, and I was just like, okay, yeah, I'm gonna probably join, like, 30 of these. And it's so nice to just be able to, like, oh, maybe I'm interested in this, you know, and go meet these people. You're like, okay, that's not for me. Let me try something else. And, like, eventually, like, you will find your spot here on campus. Like, there's so many good people here, and there's so many good ways to get involved and connected on campus. And I truly think it's, like, one of the only universities that, like, we have this such expansive network of, like, really awesome alumni and really awesome people.
[00:11:20] Speaker B: So, yeah, I love both of those answers, especially because I think that they both have that found of being connected and belonging, you know, because you could have gone in so many different directions with that answer. But I think that also really ties in to what we're seeing in the UA student as far as the reason that they stay in school and that they thrive is that social connection in the sense of finding their people. So it's not just, oh, you know, I can go to this different social event or, like, this activity is happening on campus, but truly actually finding your people and feeling like you're in a connected community. Because I think that for a student who may be considering UA and they're coming from a smaller town and they're thinking, oh, my goodness, a campus of over 40,000 students, how am I going to find myself there? Am I just going to be a number? But for you guys to be very encouraging and saying, hey, you. You have the opportunity to find your place. There are so many different student organizations that are out there. And, you know, even when I think about the number of tables that were at get on Board day or the number of student organizations that are typically represented, because I'm not going to pretend that I know that number off the top of my head. As far as number of student orgs, y' all may know from your involvement with sga, I just know that there's literally hundreds of student organizations.
[00:12:41] Speaker D: Just like majors.
[00:12:43] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:12:43] Speaker D: Like, there's hundreds of majors and. And then student orgs. And you will find your flavor here at some. Somehow you may have to do a little bit of, like, getting out there, especially if you're introverted not to put yourself out there, but you'll find it.
[00:12:59] Speaker B: Yes. Nika, I'm thinking. So, you know, obviously you have worn, in addition to your faculty hat. You know, you've had that advisor hat on before for. For so long. During your time here at UA professionally, do you find yourself often encouraging students about the need for them to plug in and find their people when you've had those advising appointments with students, when they've talked about struggling?
[00:13:24] Speaker D: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. I tend to see that two types of students, they either came in and kind of went right in and found their people, whether it was through their. Where they were living or through the grief system or going out there and doing get on Board day. Or you find the ones that maybe were a little bit more shy, maybe a little bit more like, maybe this will fall into my lap. And they just go to class and then go to the dorm and come back and they'll have conversations where they'll say, I think I'm going to transfer back. And I ask, okay, why? Because here's the thing. We want, wherever you go to college, to feel like home.
It's got to feel like home. And what is it that it's not? And sometimes talking to them is they haven't found their people. And that's when I say, we can fix that real quick. You know, sometimes they say, this is not home, because I genuinely miss my family, and they are across the country, and I just really want to go home. And I'm like, that's okay.
[00:14:26] Speaker B: Yeah, that's fair.
[00:14:27] Speaker D: That's there. We'll miss you, but we understand. No hard feelings. All time, forever. But if it's just, hey, you know, have you not put yourself out there, Give it another semester, do these things, and then if you still don't love it, we'll talk about, you know, finding the equivalent courses somewhere else. But for right now, let's. Let's. Let's dip our toe into the water.
[00:14:48] Speaker B: Yes. There's so much that campus has to offer. And, you know, on that topic, you know, we have Mary Kate and Brooklyn here specifically today. Today to talk about SGA's Capstone Wellness Explorer program. But we're going to take a quick break, but then we're going to dive into all things cwe. So you guys hang on tight. Grab something to drink, get hydrated, run to the restroom. Do what you got to do. You are listening to fit to be tied with sheena and Nika on 90.7, the capstone.
[00:15:18] Speaker A: Wvuafm tuscaloosa foreigners.
[00:15:29] Speaker D: You are listening to fit to be tied with Sheena and Na on 90.7, the capstone. And we are joined today by guest Mary Kate Foster, who serves as the SGA vice president for belonging and wellness, and Brooklyn Hadley, who serves as the capstone wellness explorer director of outreach.
So, ladies, we would love to get more information about how did you land this role within the university student government association or how'd you even find out about it? Like, how did this just come into your life?
[00:15:59] Speaker B: Yeah, it's like, what's your journey?
[00:16:01] Speaker C: No, yeah, totally. Well, honestly, in high school, I wasn't even in sga. I was kind of on a different side of things. I was on the honor council and I loved it. It was a cool experience. But I knew that when I got to college, I wanted to try something a little different.
And my brother was actually an sga and he was like, mary Kate, just give it a shot, you know, so.
And I learned that freshman year I was like, I'm going to try to say yes to as much as I possibly can, even if I don't know for sure if I'm going to like it or not. I want to give it a shot.
So I took Johnny's advice. Shout out, Johnny. And I tried out for first year council. And thankfully I made it. And it was such a cool experience that it really introduced me to the legislative process of sga.
And I loved it. And from there I wanted to do more. So, yeah, nice.
[00:16:48] Speaker A: Brooklyn I have like a totally different experience with sga, but you know, I think it's kind of nice to see like both complete ends of it. I also was not involved in SGA in high school. I was a big volleyball person. I dedicated like so much time to volleyball in high school. I like, didn't really do anything else, honestly, in high school, except for that. So when I got to college, I had literally no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was like, oh, I'll just try out a bunch of different things, kind of see what intrigues me a little bit. And I actually didn't end up applying to my SJ position right now until the end of my sophomore year. So, like, I started technically at the beginning of my junior year and I applied to this cabinet, this position. Obviously I'm pre med, so kind of the health and wellness aspect of it was really intriguing to me. I couldn't really see myself doing anything else because I didn't really see how it related to me or pertained to me. But so I tried out for this or I applied, interviewed, got this, and I applied to the director of outreach position last year and I loved it so much that I reapplied again this year.
But yeah, I mean, I think it's kind of interesting how we both came from completely different, like, different, like, ways of getting into sga. Like, obviously she started with first year council, which is freshman year, like, huge, big involvement. And then I, you know, didn't even start to my junior year. So I think it's really great that like, you know, you can get involved really at any time.
[00:18:10] Speaker D: I think that's important for our listeners.
[00:18:11] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:18:12] Speaker D: You didn't miss the boat?
[00:18:13] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:18:14] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah. No, I love that. Yes. Like, Nika, I couldn't have said it better. Like, you literally did not miss the boat on that. So for our listeners, whether you're a first year student or, you know, you're, it's your sophomore year, junior year, whatever else, like shoot your shot, man. Yeah, you know.
So thinking about Capstone Wellness Explorer and the current roles that you both have with sga. Tell us a little bit more about your roles and what's involved in those responsibilities.
[00:18:42] Speaker C: Yeah, well, honestly, for me, my role is to basically just support the holistic well being of all students here at ua. I think we have so many resources here on campus that a lot of our students are unaware of. And one big thing that I'm trying to do this year is just promote all of the amazing resources that we have and I think the new student well being hub coming soon will be another awesome way to kind of get the word out there. But yeah, I, I absolutely love it. It's been such a great experience. I've been able to connect students with different organizations and different administrators and it has been such a blessing for me to watch and see and be that kind of helping hand for students when they need someone.
[00:19:25] Speaker A: So, yes, like I said earlier, I am the director of outreach for the cwe. Basically my job is to literally do the exact same thing. Outreach about the CWE to as many people and organizations as possible.
So we're always contacting sororit frats. Campuses are different, like colleges on campus, just like a bunch of different clubs and departments, all that kind of stuff. Just about, hey, like, we have this really awesome thing, you know, the cwe. You should like register all of your events to like, be a point for us. So so many students will come and like, also just like letting club members and Greek life members know, like, hey, we have this really cool program where, you know, you can like really explore all the different health and wellness aspects on campus. And like, we really encourage you to go and it's so much fun. So yeah, I'm always out here giving presentations to different organizations and clubs and all that. So yeah, that's basically my role in this.
[00:20:18] Speaker B: Very nice. So, you know, we keep saying Capstone Wellness Explorer or cwe. And I betcha, Nika, we probably have some listeners that are like, I don't know what you're talking about. Tell us what Capstone Wellness Explorer is. So if one of y' all wants to kind of take the lead and tell us what is your elevator pitch? When they're like, what is Capstone Wellness Explorer?
[00:20:39] Speaker A: Okay, amazing. I was gonna say, I give this elevator pitch like so many times. So basically the Capstone Wellness Explorer is the SGA's engagement tracking program that seeks to promote student health and wellbeing across campus.
Basically what we do is we outreach to different clubs and organizations and departments that we, you know, kind of think would align with our like, holistic well being model that we have. And we encourage them to like submit events that they have. So like, for instance, you know, a health related club might be tabling on campus and we're like, hey, submit that. And like, we will post it out to like the entire student body for them to come, you know, learn a bit, learn a little bit about your club, what your club promotes and supports and you know, maybe you'll get a new club follower. If not Then you just know you have more people that know about your club. And then secondly, we have events that are more like learning about health and wellness. So we have like the intuitive eating talks that are always CWE appoints and we encourage students to go to that and learn a little bit, you know, more about intuitive eating.
So basically it's just a program that, you know, promotes student engagement in health and health and wellness related events all across campus.
[00:21:50] Speaker D: I like, that's like the hub.
It's like where you go to get your info.
[00:21:55] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:21:56] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: No, well, I'm like, I'm also just sitting over here appreciating the fact that you get a shout out to our intuitive eating workshop, which I lead. But so, you know, you're, you're talking about the fact that we have like all of these different health and wellness events that are hosted by different entities on campus. And then you guys are able to assign a point value that, that students can get points in. From my knowledge of the program, I understand that they can get those points on behalf of a student organization they belong to. Is that correct? And then what is the overall incentive for student orgs getting, you know, as many points as possible? Tell us about, you know, what's the dangling carrot?
[00:22:38] Speaker A: Yes. So we actually have two pathways. We have the individual pathway and the organizational pathway. More about the organizational pathway specifically.
So obviously on campus we have block seating for the football games and stuff, which is like always like a fight to the death who gets the best block in canvas. Like we want to be in the front row and all that kind of stuff. So the caps and wellness explorer points actually go towards 11% of an organization's block seating. So that is really the main incentive with that. And the great thing about the CWE is you can get points for as many organizations as you want. So you're not just limited to like your sorority or your fraternity or like whatever your main club on campus is or anything like that. You can literally get CW points at the same time for 10 different organizations on campus if you wanted to. As long as you're like an active member, obviously. But yeah, I would really say like the dangling Karen is the block seating. You know, I'm a kyo, she's a Katie. We're always like fighting tooth and nail like, oh, who's gonna get the best block this year? And really the CWE is like a huge chunk of that block. So members are always fighting to go to these different events on campus that are health and wellness related and really like, you know, get as many points as possible for their organization.
[00:23:51] Speaker D: Hey, it works if we have to kind of, you know, sneak. You sneak some health and wellness in there just to get you to learn some stuff. Hey, because your end goal is block sating, I'm all right with that.
[00:24:03] Speaker C: Yeah, Yeah.
[00:24:03] Speaker A: I know.
[00:24:04] Speaker D: It's.
[00:24:04] Speaker A: It's really great. I remember last year. I remember last year. I like the kickoff. I made all of my friends go because I was like, guys, we have to get points, and you have to learn about health and wellness, too. And they all came up to me after, like, we found so many cool clubs. Like, we had no idea even existed. They're like, I joined a few and I was like. I was. I was like, okay, see, I have, like, an ulterior motive. I'm not just trying to get points,
[00:24:22] Speaker D: you know, I love that. I love that. So tell me, tell us. Do we have time, Ms. Sheena, for them to tell us about the upcoming capstone Wellness or kickoff event? Yes.
[00:24:34] Speaker C: Yes. Well, the capstone wellness Explorer kickoff event is this Thursday on September 17th from 6 to 9pm we are so excited. We're going to have so many different table or organizations tabling, and we're going to have some performers. We're going to have snacks like popcorn and cotton candy. I think we got Reed as.
[00:24:55] Speaker D: Wait, wait, where's. Where's this cotton candy going to be? At
[00:24:59] Speaker A: the student center lawn.
[00:25:01] Speaker D: Okay. Cotton candy.
[00:25:03] Speaker C: Yes. We are so excited.
[00:25:04] Speaker D: That's the health and wellness person.
[00:25:06] Speaker B: Well, hey, everything in moderation, my friends.
[00:25:09] Speaker D: You know, fall for some people is soup. Fall for me is candy corn and trick or treating. So.
[00:25:15] Speaker B: Well, yeah, I know you've. Mary Kate, you've just kind of shared some teaser information there. We've got to take a break, but let's talk a little bit more about that, you know, and we also want to talk and see what the response has been with Capstone Wellness Explorer from, you know, the time of its inception just a handful of years ago to what you guys have seen. And, you know, Brooklyn, I think for you, you have that really great vantage point of this being your second year as director of outreach for the program. So, you guys, we're gonna take a deep.
A deep break, a quick break, but we're gonna dive back into it in just a moment. You are listening to Fit to be tied with Sheena and Nika on 90.7, the capstone.
[00:25:58] Speaker A: Wvuafm Tuscaloosa.
[00:26:07] Speaker D: Happy Sunday, y'.
[00:26:08] Speaker B: All.
[00:26:08] Speaker D: You are listening to Fit to be tied with Sheena and N on 90.7 the capstone.
[00:26:12] Speaker C: That's.
[00:26:13] Speaker D: Oh, well, you're good. I was just gonna say. And if you're just joining us, take it away, Sheena.
[00:26:18] Speaker B: If you are just joining us, you have just heard me rudely enter my beloved co host as I'm like, I think we're both just so excited talking about Capstone Wellness Explorer. We ladies, you will. If you listen any of our other episodes, you can tell when Nick and I get really, like, pumped up by the topics that are being talked about and the guests that we have. So I think that was me just being really excited.
[00:26:44] Speaker D: We're just geeked out. We're just very excited about this. But for those that are just tuning in, we are joined by Mary Kate Foster and Brooklyn Hadley, who serve our student governments association belonging and wellness.
I guess.
Is it like the branch of it?
[00:27:03] Speaker C: Yes, ma'. Am. It's like a board.
[00:27:05] Speaker A: It's like a board.
[00:27:05] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:27:06] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:27:06] Speaker D: And in the last segment, you were telling us that on this Thursday, September 17th, that y' all were going to have a Capstone Wellness Explorer kickoff event and we want to learn a little bit more about that. Right?
[00:27:18] Speaker B: Yeah. So you were mentioning you have all these student organizations out there. But I. One thing that intrigued me was the word performers. Tell me a little bit about what this looks like. Like, who performers performs, where did the performances happen?
I'm just. Yes, I'm intrigued because I'm going to be coming for the performances and the cotton candy.
[00:27:37] Speaker D: Right, right.
[00:27:38] Speaker A: So the. Anytime I'm like, oh, yeah, we have performances. Everyone's like, what do you mean? And I'm like, just you wait. So for example, last year we had an organization called the Wellness Society come up on stage and they did like a five minute, like yoga lead, a like a yoga flow session for everyone in the crowd. And everyone just kind of stopped and was doing like yoga poses. And we like, yes, health and wellness. Yes. And then like, obviously we have like dancers come.
What? Who is the dancers?
[00:28:09] Speaker D: We're having.
[00:28:09] Speaker C: I think we're having AV dance.
[00:28:11] Speaker A: Oh, yes. AV dance. And then we have like, we had that on acapella group last year. So it's really just like anyone that, you know where you're like, yep, that's health and wellness to us. You know, some good music. That's. That's wellness to me. So anyone that's like up there and just wants to come perform and like just really showcase their club off and be like, yes, we are so awesome. We have so health and wellness focus and.
[00:28:35] Speaker D: Yeah, okay.
[00:28:37] Speaker B: Yeah, Nika. I'M hearing them talk about their performances and especially the people that are demoing some different group exercise things. And of course, I'm thinking, Nika, you gotta do some body blast.
[00:28:50] Speaker D: Oh, my goodness.
For those of you who don't know way, way back in the day.
[00:28:56] Speaker B: Yeah, like, this was like 2011.
[00:28:59] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:29:00] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:29:02] Speaker D: The former co host of the show, Ms. Whitney Pape and I used to do boot camps twice a day, twice a week.
And Ms. Gina over here was front row body blasting it, just giving it all she got. And I love it. That was back when my energy metabolism was a lot higher. You know what?
[00:29:24] Speaker B: But shout out to some group exercise at the rec center.
[00:29:27] Speaker D: So, you know, you know, it was fun. I played fun music, we did fun things. You know, we. A lot of hype, man. Yeah, DJing, it was fun.
[00:29:35] Speaker B: Well, if you want to go back to your group X, you know, days, I'm sure we could assign a CAPS and Wellness Explorer point for some of those things
[00:29:45] Speaker D: to watch their instructor feel miserably on stage. Kind of like pie in the face kind of thing. I think that's what they would come for. But you know, if. If it gets people involved, you know, I'm always up for embarrassing myself.
[00:29:58] Speaker B: Okay, so before the break, I. I was mentioning. I'm kind of curious about the response of the Capstone Wellness Explorer program overall, just what you've noticed from a historical perspective, because am I correct that this is its third active year? Is that correct? So what have you guys noticed in terms of trending of the numbers as far as number of. Of students participating and. Or number of events that have been applied for as a CWE event?
Yeah.
[00:30:28] Speaker C: Well, from my perspective, I have seen the numbers and how much they've risen over the past year. I think it was from two years ago to last year. It was a crazy rise in how many people wanted to attend the events and especially CWE kickoff. But I want to pass it over to Brooklyn because she was the director last year, so she was ever. She was able to experience everything firsthand. So I'd love to hear your yes.
[00:30:56] Speaker A: So I am honestly not sure about the exact numbers, but I believe last year we increased from the first year, like attendance by over like 300%.
[00:31:05] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:31:06] Speaker A: For like, it was a ginormous increase. And obviously like the first year just like getting started, all that kind of stuff from. And then, you know, the second year it like really took off and.
Yeah, I mean, it was honestly crazy to see. We had at the kickoff last year, we had over 2,000 students attend, which is, it was like one of the biggest like student events like ever.
Like, I think that's what somebody said last year. But yes, like, the response has been amazing. It's like people are actually really interested in like going to all this and if they're like not and you know, you know, their friend that happens to be director of outreach forces them to go to the event, they ended up really liking it and really wanting to go to more events just to like kind of see what was out there. Because I feel like a lot of people, you know, just don't really know what is out there. But the response has been amazing. I mean, even with people reaching out to us to like get their events to be CWE points. You know, I've had people text me that I know they're like, I need this event to be CWE point. And I'm like, well, you ought to wait till the kickoff. You know, the kickoff.
Like I, I'm like, I'm glad you're so excited for this, but you know, we do have to wait until the kickoff for your event. But the, I mean, the response has just been amazing. Like, it's really cool to see like all of our work just kind of like take fruition and like, kind of see like the whole student like body kind of know about it. So.
[00:32:24] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, I like, I know. Well, I like that students are actually coming to something that is health and wellness and it's not because it's an extra point for a class. I mean, I do know that they get their points for the organization, but I feel like with 2,000 people, there's got to be some in there that are just coming to better their health. Yes.
[00:32:44] Speaker B: And you know, thinking back, just something that you guys shared earlier when, when events are applied for, for, for different points, I like the fact that there are different levels of engagement in terms of the events that are offered and that you guys are appropriately assigning points based on that. So for somebody who is attending a tabling event, you know, that might be worth one point. But if someone is going into a, you know, hands on workshop where it's a multi week series and you know, and they're really getting this deep of, of information, you're going to reward that program because of the level of intensity of the information with a higher point value. So I think that that's really cool too.
[00:33:29] Speaker D: Makes it really worth their time.
[00:33:30] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:33:32] Speaker B: Now thinking about, you know, just thinking about everything that you guys have shared today, I think, you know, we've touched on this a little bit. But I'm curious, how has being involved in various areas of campus enhanced your own health and well being as a student at ua?
[00:33:46] Speaker C: Yeah, well, for me, I feel like I've met so many different people that I'm now best friends with that I wouldn't have met otherwise if I wasn't in SGA or if I wasn't in KD or in these different clubs and organizations. It's been so amazing to meet all these awesome people who are. They're just so motivated and they're driven and they love being a student serving students. And it makes me happy because I'm the same way. And. And it's just so awesome finding people who share the same interests as you.
And. Yeah, it's been fabulous.
[00:34:21] Speaker A: Yeah. So for me, whenever I think about health and wellness, you know, my mind honestly does go to the Alabama model for student health and wellbeing, probably because I look at it like every day, but my mind immediately goes to that. And I can find a way that being connected in campus fits into every single one of the seven categories.
And like, for instance, academic wellness, like, I have my friends in class that help me study and like, it makes studying not feel so bad and really keeps me motivated and I'm, you know, not always stressed out. I mean, social wellness is especially like being connected throughout campus and being involved. Like, you meet just so many different people that come from so many different backgrounds that you're like, wow, I never would have been friends with you if I hadn't have joined this one club or went to this one event before. So. So I mean, I just feel like it really has impacted, you know, every single aspect of my life being connected with on this campus.
[00:35:14] Speaker B: I, you know, I feel like a broken record just saying. I love that.
[00:35:19] Speaker D: Yeah, I mean, I, I love it with my whole heart because I think it's very easy when you kind of pan back and get like a bird's eye view of college life. People tend to think, think, you go to class, you come home, you go to a party, you come home, you go to a football game, you go to class, repeat. And it's so much more than that. I mean, there's actual, like you said, friends studying, friends doing yoga on the lawn. You know, like there's. This is real life happening.
It's not like life is being put on hold for four years and you're just going in and being a sponge in a classroom and then going to football games. It's.
[00:36:01] Speaker B: There's.
[00:36:01] Speaker D: There's life Happening. Yes. And whatever you want that life to look like, there is a place for you here.
[00:36:09] Speaker B: So on that note, you know, I know we're about to have to take a quick break and we're going to have you guys on for our closing segment because I really want to ask you a very random rogue question, but, Mary Kate, could you quickly tell our listeners if someone is interested in being involved with SGA specifically, what's the best way for them to find out about what opportunities are out there?
[00:36:31] Speaker C: Yeah, well, there's so many different ways to get involved in sga. There's first. First year council. That's how I got involved. You could also go through Senate, which is so fun. I was in senate and it was a cool. It was very similar to first year council, another part of the legislative body. It was really cool to learn about that side of things. There's lobby board. There are so many different ways to get involved with sga and we are constantly posting reminders in different, different, different ways to get involved on our Instagram. So it's so fun. That's where you could look. We're also sending out emails all the time and we'll have some posters up on the TVs in the student center sometime. So.
[00:37:10] Speaker B: Yeah, okay, perfect. Well, we've got. Yeah, y' all are like whether it's email, social media, digital signage, all the things, look at the website. But you guys, we're going to take a quick break and then we'll be asking a random question. You guys are listening to Fit to be tied with Sheena and Nika on 90.7 the capstone.
[00:37:33] Speaker A: Wvuafm tuscaloosa.
[00:37:42] Speaker D: Welcome back, listeners. You have been listening to Fit to be tied with Sheena and Nneka on 90.7 the capstone.
[00:37:48] Speaker B: That's right. And if you are just now joining us, you have got to go back and listen to our earlier segments because we've had a fabulous time with Mary Kate Foster, SGA Vice President for belonging and wellness and Brooklyn Hadley Capstone, Wellness Explorer Director of Outreach, as they have spoken about the Capstone Wellness Explorer program and the upcoming CWE kickoff that's going to be happening this Thursday. And so, ladies, I know I told you before the break that this is the point in time where we tend to ask very random question.
Um, so my question for our guest today is what celebrity would you want to play you in your biopic?
[00:38:31] Speaker C: Yeah, let me think here.
[00:38:36] Speaker D: So Sheena and I have answered this question many times on the show.
It's one of Our favorites to ask our guests. But, Sheena, does your answer still stand for you?
[00:38:47] Speaker B: I think mine does, because do I normally say.
Yeah, Mindy Killing.
[00:38:52] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:38:53] Speaker B: And then you're. And then you're Reese Witherspoon, right?
[00:38:56] Speaker D: Correct.
[00:38:56] Speaker B: Yeah. So, you know, I think just the energy, you know, sometimes, like, I'm like, do I know any Filipino celebrities? Not really, but I'm like, if I can pick outside of my.
Outside of, like, my ethnicity, then, you know. But yeah, so you got to get creative sometimes.
[00:39:15] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, we still. We still. We still rocking with our OGs.
[00:39:18] Speaker B: We are.
[00:39:19] Speaker D: But how about for y'? All?
[00:39:20] Speaker A: Okay, I have, like, two answers, and I have one based off, like, who I have been told I look like.
[00:39:26] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:39:27] Speaker A: And then I have one that I would want to play me because I feel like they encapture my personality. Well, okay, so the one that I think that looks like me the most is. I can't remember. I think it's. It might be Jody Foster. It's never plays Clarice on Silence of the Last.
[00:39:43] Speaker D: Oh, my God.
She was the one with Freaky Friday.
Her breaking the school circle, dude.
[00:39:50] Speaker B: And, you know, and she also, like, you have that very good, like, your voice, Kate. Like it. It's a Jodie Foster kind of. Yeah.
[00:39:58] Speaker A: So she. That's also like, I've, like, watched Silence of the Lambs, which I know is, like, so crazy, but I watch it all the time because Jodie Foster, her role in that movie is, like, exactly what I want to do. Like, I want to do forensic psychiatry. So, I mean, like, I've just always been like, oh, wow, that's so cool. But personality wise, I would say Jennifer Lawrence, I feel like she, like, okay, I like that.
[00:40:17] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:40:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:40:18] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:40:19] Speaker B: What about you?
[00:40:20] Speaker C: For me, I'm just trying to think of somebody who's just, like, super chill, laid back, is like, can take the heat if they need to and just doesn't. Just doesn't, you know, react crazy. I think Selena Gomez, she's very. Oh, she's very real. And I love that about her. Like, I just want to be her. I want her to be, like. I want to be her. She's just so real. And, like, I just feel like she's been through so much in her life. Life. And she's so strong. Like, she's literally the strongest ever.
[00:40:51] Speaker A: I love it.
[00:40:52] Speaker D: She.
[00:40:52] Speaker A: Awesome.
[00:40:53] Speaker D: So this will be a little bit. I agree with that. This will be a little bit too old to play you because you're young, but Jennifer Gardner, really?
[00:41:02] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:41:03] Speaker D: She has that layback fun, you know, 30.
[00:41:06] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[00:41:08] Speaker D: What else? 13 going on 30. But she's been in a lot of things. She just has laid back kind of fun.
Just like bubbly.
I know.
[00:41:17] Speaker B: I was trying to refrain from like sharing some celebrities that I thought for y' all because, you know, with my perspective as a geriatric millennial, I'm like, okay, are they gonna know these references? But yeah, the Jennifer Garner is right on the money, too. But the Selena Gomez I take totally see.
[00:41:34] Speaker D: But yeah, she's so awesome. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:41:37] Speaker C: That was a fun question. Yeah.
[00:41:38] Speaker B: Thank you guys for entertaining our random questions. Thank y'.
[00:41:42] Speaker D: All.
[00:41:43] Speaker B: We, we also want to thank you for your time today. Really just setting the stage for Capstone Wellness Explorer, especially for our listeners who are unfamiliar with the program. Now, Nika and I know where to be for some performances. Some popcorn and some cotton candy.
You know, learning about all of our different health and wellness wellbeing related student orgs and departments on campus. But you guys, thank you so much for the work that you do here at the University of Alabama through your service to the student government association.
[00:42:13] Speaker D: Rolls out to that.
[00:42:14] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:42:15] Speaker B: But you guys, it has been another wonderful show. We're so grateful for you listening. We can't wait to catch you guys next week. You have been listening to Fit to be tied with Sheena and Nika on 90.7 the capstone.
[00:42:33] Speaker A: Wvuafm tuscaloosa.
